FREE PORT LAW OF URUGUAY

The Uruguayan law of Free Port was created in 1992 under law nr 16246 (link to the law in Spanish), and offers the following benefits:
Free movement of goods in transit without any formalities or special authorizations;
No time limit for goods storage;
Foreign users can maintain their goods property without the need of establishing a local corporation in Uruguay ;
Users can store their goods under free port warehouses as an extension of their own business in their country of origin;
The merchandise does not lose the origin certificate, therefore keeping the original benefits to any destination.
They can sell, buy, or directly endorse their goods stored in the Free Port, to any company abroad, without having to pay any fee or tax;
Merchandise can be re-exported, as well as partially or totally imported to any country;
With the Free Port Law or Free Trade Zone Law, foreign users are exempt from any local taxes or customs duties related to the goods;

The only requirement is to inform Uruguayan Customs the amount of packages (volumes) and the gross weight of the merchandise in transit, which are done electronically by the port operators.
